Savior, please do not pass me by
"Pass me not, O gentle Savior, hear my humble cry. While on others Thou art smiling, do not pass me by. Savior, Savior, hear my humble cry. While on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by. Let me at Thy throne of mercy find a sweet relief. Kneeling there in deep contrition; help my unbelief."
I heard this song on my drive home from work today. I put it on repeat at least ten times as the old hymn became the prayer of my heart. The lyrics reveal the realization that I cannot _____ without God. (Fill in the blank with anything.) I do not want God to pass me by. I won't make it if He does.
Then at Friday Night Bible Study Group, I was very surprised to find that Abraham had said this very thing, oh so long ago! "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by." (Gen 18) Essentially, good ol' Abe was saying: Please stay awhile. Please fellowship with me. Please allow me to serve you. Do not pass me by.
It's evident that Abraham values God as precious. He was humbled and awed and thankful that the Lord would visit him. Sadly, I don't usually think of God this way. I don't regard Him as precious to me. I don't treasure Him like how Abraham treasured His visit... Thus, I can see that it's no coincidence that this song and this passage of Scripture with the same words both struck me on the same day! Kneeling here in deep contrition, help my unbelief...Savior, do not pass me by.
