  • a p.s. about “my” church

my director is not ecstatic about my going to mppc.  he thinks it’s too large and i might not be able to find community.  he’s probably right about the first.  but the second?  who knows what God will do.  my director wants me to go to GrX (an asian american, GenX church with mostly twenty-somethings).  why?  i think he wants me to be able to network for my ministry.  yep, that church would be good for that.  but somehow, i just don’t feel compelled to go there  – at least, not now.  mppc is a white church; i’ve never been to a white church before!  i’d like that.  a good, cross-cultural experience for me.  plus, i promised myself i’d find a church with”good teaching” once i got up here, and mppc has great teaching.  at least, let me give it a try!  if i end up with no community, completely lonely, etc, then i’ll make a switch.  i’m not marrying the church!!

i’m so excited… i’m actually going to sacrifice my reading time of the ted dekker book (and you know i’m so dying to read it; i mean, i wrote a whole entry about it) to go to a bible study tonight… :)

  • hi mary ann! i’m so happy for you!

  • FWIW, GrX never identified ourselves as an Asian-American church, and we just hired its new ministry director who is white. So, we’re slowly shedding our “Asian-American”-ness. =)

Community — yes, the community and relational aspect has blessed me more than any other church I’ve been. Most of the relationships, and the teaching is done in the small groups, and also in Sunday school classes (we call them “Life University). Compared to other chuches, in the Sunday messages, GrX has not so much heavy Biblical/theological content, but more “real-life” stuff. Not for everyone, but no church is.

As for hooking up, I’ve not noticed any hookup rate at GrX higher than previous churches I’ve been to… ;)

  • so happy to see a :) in this entry!

love you mary ann! i’m not sure when i will be trekkin up to norcal… but i sure do miss you! so i hope to chat soon.

  • haha.  i hate to say it, ryu2, but even if you have one white director at grx, it’s not going to shed the asianess. the church is oozing with asian american christian culture…

  • maybe you too will get hooked up with a white boy and have cute babies!

  • i’m excited for you!  i’m glad you’ve found a place that could possibly be home! :)

  • haha cindy
and haha also to that dude who tried to plug for his church. hahahhah

  • oh gosh.. cindy sounds slightly bitter. haha..

  • Just to clarify my motives… I’m leaving GrX myself to go overseas soon.

Just wanna make things clear about my “plugging” =P

  • Great eXchange of phone numbers?  hahah.

Churches are unfortunately more about community than they are about teaching.  Good teaching has to do with interaction with the teacher.  Usually a sunday morning sermon is not much different than listening to a “great” sermon on the radio.

  • dude i was not bitter! :)
