  • Just call me Belle Ann Castille

    “What’s your name?”
“Will you please call me Cordelia?”  she said eagerly.
“Call you Cordelia!  Is that your name?”
“No-o-o, it’s not exactly my name, but I would love to be called Cordelia.  It’s such a perfectly elegant name.”
“I don’t know what on earth you mean.  If it isn’t Cordelia, what is?”
“Anne Shirley…I’m not ashamed of it, only I like Cordelia better.  I’ve always imagined that my name was Cordelia…But if you call me Anne please call me Anne spelled with an e.”

A ridiculous conversation.  But it keeps me amused and probably will for all time.  Funny, Anne spent her life fighting for that “e”, and I’ve spent my life fighting for people to remember that my name is Mary Ann, without the e.  :)   And yet Anne and I are so much alike.  I too have an imagined name.  :)   When Sam watched the movie with me a few weeks ago, he exclaimed with amusement, “I think I understand you better now — Belle!”  Hooray.

This book is like magic to me.  I enter another world — and I’m reminded that I need to approach life with as much awe and delight and imagination as Anne does.  No one has as much optimism and spirit as Anne of Green Gables.  And I love the fact that when she waltzes into someone’s life, they are inextricably changed – for the better.  I want to be Anne!
